The cannabis plant has been consumed by humans for thousands of years. As consumption methodology has evolved throughout the years, today there are many different ways to consume. In this piece, we’ll go way back to explore the numerous ways humans have used and consumed cannabis from past up to present day, highlighting some key factors to help you find your perfect method.

Let’s Go Way Back

It is believed that cannabis is one of the world’s oldest cultivated plants, believed to be first discovered in Central Asia. Humans likely first used cannabis for not feeling its physical effects, but rather more as a form of ritual, as it was often burned during a burial. It is believed that this was conducted to honour and celebrate one’s life.

Back to Basics

Unquestionably, the most common method to consume cannabis has been to smoke it, which involves the combustion of the dried cannabis flower while inhaling its smoke. This traditional form of enjoying cannabis can be done primarily through using a rolled joint, blunt, pipe, or a bong.

Smoking cannabis will almost instantly deliver cannabinoids into the bloodstream. The user will typically start to feel the effects within minutes. As the effects are felt quickly, this generally allows a user to better control their dosage based on the current and desired effects.

As the most common method of conumption, smoking cannabis may expose the user to certain health risks, as any form of smoking that involves inhalation may irritate the lungs and could contribute to respiratory issues over time.

The Rise of Vaporizers

Consumers preference has shifted toward vaping over recent years, as it is known to be a much more discreet and convenient way to consume. The act of vaporizing involves heating cannabis flower or concentrates to a temperature that will release its active compounds (THC and CBD) without combustion, thereby creating vapor instead of smoke.

Similar to traditional smoking, in using a vaporizer there is a nearly immediate onset of experiencing effects. Vaporizers make a great option to consume cannabis as not only are they more discreet, they also does not produce the same strong cannabis smell as a traditional joint or blunt.

As a result of the convenience of a vaporizer and the ability to be discreet, over consumption can occur which ultimately may lead into higher dependency of the substance over time.

Edibles

Edibles are commonly recognized as being either a food or beverage that has been infused with cannabinoids such as THC and/or CBD and are consumed orally. This is a popular alternative that many people have gravitatde to over smoking and vaping. Edibles can come pre-made, or alternatively, cannabis oils can be added to home cooking. Edibles can come in various forms such as chocolate, gummies, baked goods, sodas, teas, and the list goes on.

Edibles may be a preferred choice for a couple of reasons; one being that like vaping, it remains discreet. Also, there is no respiratory impact.

Many describe cannabis edibles as having a different effect than smoking or vaping, and these effects tend to last longer. The onset time of experiencing the effects of edibles usually ranges from 30 minutes to an hour and a half. Due to the delayed effects, over consumption may occur, therefore managing a daily dosage should be of priority.

Summary

As cannabis has witnessed greater acceptance and reduced stigma over the years, consumption methods have also evolved catering to different lifestyles and personal preference. As each consumption method is unique and may provide a different experience, it is ideal to carefully explore different forms of consumption while recognizing the pros and cons associated with each to help you find your ideal method.
